macOS Big Sur elevates the most advanced desktop operating system in the world to a new level of power and beauty. Experience Mac to the fullest with a refined new design. Enjoy the biggest Safari update ever. Discover new features for Maps and Messages. Get even more transparency around your privacy.

Chances are, your Mac can run macOS Big Sur

The new-for-2020 13-inch MacBook Pro was the last Mac notebook waiting to be updated with the new Magic Keyboard, following its introduction on the 16-inch MacBook Pro and the 2020 MacBook Air.

The following models are supported:

There are three different kinds of MacBooks: MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. The standard MacBook is Apple's most affordable model, and it strikes a healthy balance between the power of the MacBook Pro and the portability of the MacBook. Versions of the operating system earlier than the one that shipped with a particular Mac are not compatible. MacBook Pro models running Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' or Mac OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard' are capable of running essentially all Mac software written for Intel-based Macs and the vast majority of Mac OS X. The Apple MacBook Pro 'Core Duo' 2.16 15-Inch features a 2.16 GHz 'Core Duo' processor (T2600), with two independent processor 'cores' on a single silicon chip, a 2 MB shared 'on chip' level 2 cache, a 667. Both the MacBook Air and the smaller MacBook Pro have a 13.3-inch screen running at a 2560x1600 resolution – though the Pro does use a wider P3 colour gamut, and is slightly brighter (500 nits.

The Apple MacBook Pro 'Core Duo' 2.16 15-Inch features a 2.16 GHz 'Core Duo' processor (T2600), with two independent processor 'cores' on a single silicon chip, a 2 MB shared 'on chip' level 2 cache, a 667 MHz frontside bus, 1.0 GB of 667 MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM, a 100.0 GB hard drive with 'Sudden Motion Sensor' technology, and a 4X single-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW SuperDrive. It also includes an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics processor with 256 MB of GDDR3 video memory and dual-link DVI functionality, and a 15.4' widescreen 1440x900 TFT active-matrix display (a glossy display option was available).
Like the PowerBook G4/1.67 15' (HR) that preceded it, this model has the same fiber-optic-based 'ambient light sensor' that adjusts keyboard illumination and screen brightness, the same 'scrolling TrackPad', and the same AirPort Extreme (802.11g), Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire '400' port, two USB 2.0 ports, optical digital audio in/out, and DVI out.
However, the MacBook Pro models drop the Firewire '800' and S-video out ports provided by the PowerBook G4/1.67 15' (HR), substitute a new ExpressCard/34 expansion slot for the standard Type I/II PC card slot, and drop the internal modem. The MacBook Pro also includes a built-in iSight video camera, an Apple Remote for use with Apple Front Row, and a new 'MagSafe' power connector that safely disconnects if someone accidentally trips over the cord.
Please note that this model was first offered as a 'build-to-order' option starting February 14, 2006 and became a standard configuration on May 16, 2006.
